Face/Neck Lift

With age the skin naturally loses some of its elasticity and the facial muscles weaken. As a result, the skin starts to sag resulting in jowling, folds and creases.

Before you see your surgeon, it is recommended that you consider what you want to achieve from the operation. In particular, please, understand that a face/neck lift can smooth out a sagging jowl and cheek and redefine the jaw line. Fatty fullness under the chin and jaw line can be removed (in some cases combined with liposuction) and recontoured. The sagging neck skin can be re-draped. Thus, fresh looking and youthful contours are restored.
However, a face/neck lift cannot improve the texture of the skin or fine lines (here non-surgical treatments such as i.e. laser or peeling or fillers are needed). Discolorations cannot be affected neither.

Generally the face is divided into thirds, roughly as brow, mid-face, and lower face and neck. Each must be assessed separately for the very best results to be achieved. An individualized treatment plan for your face will be offered.

Some advice:

  • A weight loss program is best to be finished before your facelift.
  • Smokers are advised to stop smoking for at least 2 weeks prior to surgery until 4 weeks after surgery, in order to help healing and reduce the risk of infection. Smoking reduces the blood supply to the thin skin flaps lifted by the surgeon.

The operation can be performed under local anaesthesia with sedation. However, the majority of patients and surgeons prefer the use of general anaesthesia.
Incisions are made above the hair line over the temple and follow the natural line in front of the ear, continuing around the ear lobe and up in the crease behind the ear onto the lower scalp. Either just the skin is tightened, or both the skin and underlying musculature (SMAS facelift). Additional procedures can be performed, such as:

The operation takes 2-3.5 hours depending on the specific technique and whether additional procedures are done. Usually the patients stay in hospital for 1 or 2 nights. If your work is not physical (no lifting or sports), expect to return to work after 7 to 10 days. Normal physical exercises can be started after 3 to 4 weeks.

After the operation you feel more or less bruised and sore. You will have a bandage for one to two days. Sutures are removed between 5 and 10 days. During the first week it is recommended to keep your head elevated to assist the swelling go down.

In the beginning your face will feel puffy and somewhat tight. The scars will be slightly pink. Subsequently as all scars, they will fade over a period of time. In most patients, they are all but invisible. However, it is important to remember that no surgical scar ever totally disappears.

Regarding possible risks and complications cosmetic surgery is very safe. However, everybody has to accept that no surgical procedure is entirely free from risk. These possible, but rare risks will be explained to you during the consultation and I shall answer all your questions. In addition, you will receive a "Patient Guide" for Face/Neck Lift.
