Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty, also known as tummy tuck, involves the surgical removal of excess skin and fat at the surface of the abdomen.

There are several variations of abdominoplasty:

  • Standard Abdominoplasty, in which excess skin and fat between the pubic bone and navel is removed. The scars are in the bikini line and around the navel.
  • Abdominoplasty with Muscle Plication, in which, in addition to skin and fat removal, the muscles in the midline of the abdominal wall are tightened to give the abdomen a flatter appearance. Brow Lift.
  • Mini-Abdominoplasty, in which excess skin and fat only above the pubic bone is removed. The navel is left intact.

In several cases a combination of abdominoplasty with liposuction is useful.

  • It is recommended to consider what you want to achieve from the surgery before you meet the surgeon. During the consultation your "belly" region will be assessed and I shall advise upon an individually treatment plan for you.

Some advice:

  • A possible weight loss program is best to be finished before your tummy tuck.
  • Smokers are advised to stop smoking for at least 2 weeks prior to surgery until 4 weeks after surgery, in order to help healing and reduce the risk of infection. Smoking reduces the blood supply to the skin flap created by the surgeon.

The operation is performed under general anaesthesia. It takes between 1.5 to 3 hours depending on the type of abdominoplasty and the size of tissue to be removed. Patients stay in hospital for 2 nights. If your work is not physical (no lifting or sports), expect to return to work after 10 to 14 days. Normal physical exercises can be started after 4 to 6 weeks.

After the operation you might feel bruised and sore. Your abdomen is likely to be swollen more or less and you will feel tight in this area. Sutures will be removed after 10 to 14 days. For 4 weeks day/night you have to wear a garment and avoid heavy lifting and sports. Best is to sleep on your back during the first weeks.

As with all scars, the scars will fade over a period of time. In most cases, the scar heals as very faint white line. However, please, note: No surgical scar ever flawlessly disappears.

Regarding possible risks and complications cosmetic surgery is very safe. However, everybody has to accept that no surgical procedure is entirely free from risk. These possible, but rare risks will be explained to you during the consultation and I shall answer all your questions. In addition, you will receive a "Patient Guide" for Abdominoplasty.
