Gynaecomastia

Although Cosmetic Surgery cannot change your life per se, more self-esteem and a better feeling within yourself can encourage you to finally make long thought changes or to continue your daily life, but now with a content smile when looking into the mirror, buying a bra, a well-fitted dress, or a new pair of jeans.

Overview

Gynaecomastia (i.e. a female type breast present on a man) is the most common form of breast problems in men.

It is generally classified in three types:

The skin can be firm or there is skin excess, which results in a saggy “breast”. It is important to distinguish between these three forms and the quality/amount of skin during the consultation since the treatment can be different.

During the consultation, I will advise upon the best option for you.

Some advice:

The operation is performed under general anaesthesia. It takes about 1 to 2 hours depending on the used technique. After a liposuction the patients usually can go home on the same day. In all other cases a one night stay in hospital is recommended. If your work is not physical (no lifting or sports), expect to return to work after 10 to 14 days. Normal physical exercises can be started after 4 to 6 weeks.

After the operation you might feel somewhat bruised and sore. Your chest is likely to be swollen. You will have a garment (vest) for 2 weeks. Best is to sleep on your back and to avoid straining or bending for about 4 weeks. Sutures will be removed after 10 to 14 days.

The scars will fade over a period of time. In most cases, they form very faint lines. However, it is important to remember that no surgical scar ever completely disappears.

Cosmetic surgery is a very safe medical procedure. Nevertheless, all patients should accept that no surgical procedure is absolutely free from risk. During the consultation, I shall inform you about these possible, but rare risks and answer all your questions. In addition, you will receive a “Patient Guide” for Gynaecomastia.
